Calculate golden mean

< 1 min read

If you like your classical architecture and proportions, you will be familiar with the concept of the golden mean. Also known as the golden ratio or golden section, it has fascinated architects and artists for centuries. The golden rectangle is thought to have the most pleasing proportions of any rectangle.

Dynamo workflow

Given an area, we can calculate the width and length of a golden rectangle as follows:

Calculate Golden Mean

Note that in the example above, the area input is in square meters, while the width and length output is converted to millimetres. If you are using different units, update the ‘Convert By Units’ node accordingly. Once the width and length values are known, these can be used to drive other elements.

For example, when spatial planning, it may be useful to start with a room’s ‘ideal’ proportions before adjusting to fit. In the workflow above, a simple rectangle is created and used to create a filled region (as a quick and dirty spatial planning tool). However, a similar workflow could be used to drive instance parameters of a family or room separate lines.
